Be careful to cut away only the grout and not into the wall.
Consider tearing apart shower walls.
When you believe you have removed or cut away most of the grout stop and examine your work.
Again do not pry away aggressively to prevent damage to the plaster.
Sometimes you can remove the old tile with a hammer and chisel without damaging the backer board but that s often difficult.
Step 1 use a hammer and chisel and work your way across to remove the tile.
Shower tiles are usually installed over drywall and or thin backerboard over drywall.
Work slowly and at about a 45 degree angle.
7 remove each tile in turn working.
Cut away the grout surrounding the tile or tiles that you want to remove.
Tiles installed with thinset or another tile adhesive often require more work to remove them.
The method used to attach the tiles to the wall affects the way the tiles come off.
Give it a try by inserting a chisel putty knife or other flat tool in between the tile and the wall almost parallel to the wall.
You may need to pry it off in two or three places if firmly attached.

Ripping the entire substrate away is much faster than removing the tiles piece by piece and if the substrate is a material like drywall it s probably going to be destroyed anyway.
